Scientists, innovators, and experts passionate about revolutionizing women's health
Unlocking opportunities in female healthcare
The first AFA Forum on female health tech will bring together the world’s prominent health experts, scientists, researchers and practitioners, innovators, and biotechnology entrepreneurs together with industry leaders, founders, and investors, as well as government representatives and policymakers to inspire and accelerate the future of innovation within women’s health and healthy aging.
Why is this important?
Modern medicine was developed with male physiology as the default.
Only 2% of R&D is spent on female healthcare even as women comprise half of the world population.
Health
Although women live longer than men, they spend more years in bad health.
Many contemporary drugs have not been tested on women (since 1993) leading to severe side effects and lack of efficiency.
Menopause impacts life expectancy
Mental and physical health is affected especially after a menopause, which women today enter on average at the age of 45, when they are at the peak of their careers.
Most conditions have few treatment options, and those available often cause frequent complications and offer minimal benefits.
Increasing autoimmune diseases (around 100 types) affect women in 78% of cases and there are no available treatments.
Misdiagnosis
Higher likelihood of 50% for women to be misdiagnosed following a heart attack than men.
Women represent half of the world’s work force and in some industries such as retail, health care and education they are dominant.
As caretakers, women’s better health has cascading benefits for children and the elderly.
